I look so forward to getting to know you and your family as we work together in the upcoming days.

A FEW HELPFUL TIPS

My goal is to create beautiful portraits that are a true reflection of your family.  Here's what you can do to help the process:

Focus on your clothing choices and prop selections before the day of the session.  Clean, iron, and make ready everything you need so that the day of the session you are relaxed and ready to shoot.

When you arrive at the location take a few minutes to focus your energy on enjoying each other and the beautiful place in which we are shooting.  This is so important.  The session should be relaxed, fun, and make a pleasant memory.

It’s often a natural instinct to want to coerce your child into smiling by asking him/her to “say cheese” or by doing something silly. I pride myself on engaging with your kids in a way that elicits a natural expression. It tends to work best if parents stay back (so long as you & your child are comfortable) to allow me to work one-on-one with your child.

Be prepared to take your time and be patient for your kids to warm up to me and to get comfortable with my big camera, and then to be patient as I wait for just the right expressions.  Sometimes parents worry that I will get frustrated if their children are not listening to me or doing just the right thing, but please don't worry about that!  It can take time and the goal is not to create a thousand images, but just a few really beautiful ones.  I have plenty of patience and am prepared to take my time.

WHAT TO WEAR

A common question among clients is what they should wear to their portrait session. Clothing choices are an integral part of creating visually pleasing images so for that reason I'm outlining a few things to consider when selecting outfits.

COLOR

Coordinating colors tend to photograph better than outfits that are perfectly matched. Consider selecting a palette of 3-4 coordinating colors and choose outfits within the palette for each family member. When choosing a color palette, consider the location we've chosen and whether it will blend well with it.  Neutral palettes are almost always a good choice.

FABRICS / PRINTS / STYLE

Try to avoid multiple conflicting prints whenever possible, as well as bold prints that will draw more attention to the clothes than to the subject.  Choose outfits that are simple and timeless.

LAYERS

Layers are a great way to add variety to a session without having to change outfits.  Choose accessories carefully, taking care not to select pieces that will distract from you and your family.  Hats are great for framing the face in individual shots but should typically not be worn for family group shots.

BE COMFORTABLE

Comfort is important so choose outfits that won't be itchy or stiff.  Make sure that clothing is appropriate for the season- warm enough in cool weather and cool enough in hot weather.

If you are still unsure about what to wear, I am happy to help you to choose.  We can meet in person or talk by Skype.

PRESERVATION

Despite the transition to social media and digital experience, I still delight in producing tactile prints that can be enjoyed together with family for generations to come. With this in mind, I bring my clients the finest quality print products on the market. Prints are produced by a professional lab on E-Surface, Metallic, or Fuji Deep Matte paper with UV coating, and wall portraits are mounted on styrene for added durability and longevity. All collections include either full resolution or web sized digital images.

A variety of products are available including fine art gallery mounts, canvas, wood prints, fine art metallic and acrylic mounts, and custom designed coffee table books.  I refer all framing to a talented local framer, GM Fotography, who has offered the finest quality framing for decades.

Thank you for choosing me.  I look forward to creating timeless portraits that you and your family will cherish for generations.
